This trip will last in our memories for a lifetime. Since this will be my last official blog post, I would like to thank everyone who had a part in making it happen. And a special thanks to Señora Gonsalves, Ms. Edgar-Lee, and Susan Schai for getting us ready for this amazing trip and being there for us along the way. Thank you everyone! Gracias por todos!

It's been a great experience for all of us. How often do high-schoolers get to go out of the country alone? There's so many people that don't get this opportunity, and we all have to realize how lucky we are. If a trip like this comes up again, it would be great to go. Wherever it may be, at least it's away from home.

As we boarded the plane and finally flew above Costa Rica for the last time, viewing the green countryside, blue mountains, and red corrugated metal-roofed buildings below, even if we were departing from Costa Rica and its landscape that grew smaller and smaller beneath us, my memories of the places we had been throughout the wonderful country would still remain vivid even back in the United States. Even weeks, or months afterward, the amazing activities, culture, and people that are all a part of Costa Rica will not fade quickly from our minds.

“It's one thing to try to raise your kids to think globally, and another to send them out there to witness it first-hand.”

The fundraising wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I sold candy for a month or so and that brought in a lot of money, but I needed more. I decided to reach out to everyone I knew, friends, family, anyone. I sent letters explaining the trip, the total amount of money I needed to have at the end, and explaining this amazing opportunity. The checks and cash began to come in whether it was $20 or $100. I used all of the money that these people offered to me to do this amazing experience. Every little bit helped me to get to Costa Rica. I am actually planning to go back next summer. The trip was amazing, but you have to be committed to raising the money or else it’s not gonna work. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone I know. It was a perfect summer!

I'm very excited for Costa Rica. Overall, my experience with Scholastic Expeditions has been great. Susan has given me so many GREAT tips on how I could raise money from the start. She kept me updated, and always gave helpful answers to my questions.

When it comes to advice for other students, I would mainly tell them to stay positive! Not to give up because they don't get $3000 within a week. There are so many options to raising money. There are many scholarships to sign up for. There's also a website that I used called GoFundMe. You just put in your goal to raise, give a description on why your trying to raise money, and that's it! You can post on facebook, twitter, and e-mail others you know to let them know what’s going on. Also, write letters to as many people you can! Family, doctor, dentist, etc. There are so many options!

Some of my current interests are swimming and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve been doing Jiu-Jitsu for about 4 years and attend about 3 times a week. I just started swimming for Dublin High this year. It's been an amazing experience so far and plan on doing it for the rest of High-School. When it comes to what I plan on doing in the future, I sort of have an idea. One of the universities I really want to go to is the University of Illinois at Chicago. I plan to study Architecture. I'm hoping to go in August to see what it is like. I have heard it's nice!

During the summer of 2013, Scholastic Expeditions provided me and my students with the opportunity to travel to the Channel Islands and be a part of the science there. My students and I had a great time. The enthusiasm of the staff at the Channel Islands played a huge part in that. Students who had been to the Channel Islands last summer still bring up the organisms they saw there when the science come up in class. It's great to see that knowledge stay with them. Susan Schai is so pleasant and such a positive person to work with. She's a the reason why I decided to partner with Scholastic Expeditions again. This summer, I'm planning on traveling to Costa Rica and Panama with my students. I am definitely looking forward to it!

I'm a Southern California native who earned a bachelor degree in biological sciences and a minor in biotechnology from Cal Poly SLO in 2004.  For the past seven years I taught both Standard and Higher level Biology within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Scotts Valley High School.   In 2011 he earned a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University and am currently the Vice Principal of SVHS.

In 2012 I traveled to Costa Rica with a group of my students. Scholastic Expeditions did a wonderful job of organizing the trip. We had so many amazing experience, including butterfly gardens, organic farming, mangrove research, zip-lining, river rafting, an animal rescues center, and surfing. The transportation and lodgings were clean, roomy, and comfortable. Our guide, Nacho, was brilliant, amazingly informative, and took all the worry out of traveling. The entire trip was centered around a study of ecosystem diversity and it couldn't have been planned better. I'd recommend this trip to anyone who loves nature, learning, and traveling.
